ARTISTS! MAKERS! WRITERS!
COME AND STAY AT GLEN DYE AND PAY US WITH YOUR WORK.

Caroline and I have always worked in creative fields. In the 1980s Caroline designed the gift and Christmas collections for Laura Ashley, which was then a company of extraordinary power and influence. While she was doing that I started and ran a record label for Warners Music. Then we did Pedlars, which was a true champion of goods with soul and provenance. And then we started The Good Life Experience, which championed food and craft.

And now we have Glen Dye Cabins and Cottages, where we have chosen every single item that you’ll encounter during your stay. I’ve bought and hung every single picture, chosen every knife and fork. Caroline has selected every colour for the walls, every curtain fabric.

What’s my point? Am I showing off or something? No! my point is that we truly value art, design, provenance and the soul of the things that surround us. It matters to us where these things are made and by whom. And we think that it matters to our guests, too.

One of the true privileges of these various businesses has been getting to know so many makers, artists, chefs and musicians. I am in awe of them all and it’s been good to be able to offer them a platform for their work.

Anyway…to my point

I thought it would be interesting to use some of the quieter months at Glen Dye to encourage artists and makers to come to Glen Dye and make work. Glen Dye is an incredibly inspiring place and a week here might stimulate all sorts of creative impulses. The deal would be simple; we give you a holiday house and -if necessary and we have such a thing- a space to work in. At the end of your stay you give us a piece of your work, whatever that might be. You can decide what this is; I am not interested in its monetary value, more in its soul. There would be no other obligation on the guest.

If helpful we would also be happy to offer a stipend to cover expenses, but we can discuss that.

This is very much a relaxed, informal thing. I like the idea of inviting creative people into the glen and of giving them space and time to make work. I don’t know how many people might be interested in this, but I’d better make it clear here that (I am pretty sure) we won’t be able to accommodate everyone. The best way to contact me is via this address (adventure@glendyecabinsandcottages.com).

We’re also commissioning craftspeople to make for us.

And in other related news, we’ve started working with a number of British makers to create bespoke products for us throughout this year.

The idea is that we’ll commission people to make small runs of a product that’s exclusive to us. We’ll then use the majority of these products in the cabins and cottages and sell the balance to our guests and followers.

This will, we hope, be an interesting and fun project and give some amazing makers a modest platform from which to show off their work.

We’ve started work on this and we’ll keep you informed.

That’s it for today. Please stay in touch and come and see us in 2024.

Best

Charlie
